Kiko and Tiko

Fun stuff

Kiko is made up, but capybaras are very real and very brilliant. Here's what they're actually like.

Capybara facts

Biggest rodents on EarthA grown-up capybara can weigh as much as a big dog, around 35 to 65 kg.
Their name means grass-eaterIt comes from a word in the Tupi language of South America.
Bird taxiLittle birds really do ride on capybaras and nibble the bugs off their fur. Just like Tiko!
Hot bath fansSome zoos in Japan run warm baths for their capybaras in winter, sometimes with citrus fruit floating in them.
Great swimmersThey have slightly webbed toes and can hold their breath underwater for about five minutes.
Everybody's friendCapybaras are so calm that ducks, monkeys, turtles and even cats happily sit next to them.
Teeth that never stopTheir front teeth keep growing all their lives, so they munch grass all day to wear them down.
Chatty animalsThey purr, click, whistle and bark to talk to each other.
Nap championsCapybaras doze on and off through the day. Kiko approves.
